male body

overview

Some areas of extra fat from the body just can't be worked off no matter how much exercise or dieting you do. Areas that affect men more commonly are the love handles, stomach, chest, and neck all of which can be treated with liposuction/liposculpture through small, inconspicuous incisions. Typically, all areas having excess fat can be removed in a single procedure, even if multiple areas are treated. Most men can return to work within a week. The best candidates for liposuction are in good general health, are of relatively normal weight, and have firm, elastic skin.

Abdomen

The ‘beer gut or potbelly’ is a popular region for male liposuction. This fat is also difficult to work off and can sometimes be a genetic trait that is completely unavoidable. Even though liposuction won't help to shed lots of weight, it's still ideal for helping to achieve a better body shape.

Any fat that you can pinch that sits above your abdominal muscles can be removed by liposuction. As abdominal fat expands, so to usually does the flanks and back fat. Liposuction in most cases can help re shape your abdomen. However, any fat that lies below your abdominal muscles and surrounds your organs like the bowel and liver cannot be removed as liposuction only takes place above the muscle wall. Fat below the muscle wall can only be removed by diet and exercise.

Love Handles

A popular target zone for men is the love handles. These are the fat deposits around the waste that are infamously hard to get rid of even with rigorous exercise. This problem can be removed without great difficulty and is permanent if no additional weight gain occurs afterwards.

Chest

Another problem area is the chest. The medical term for enlarged male breasts is gynecomastia. It's a common condition that affects more men than you'd think. Often this condition is the result of excess fat being stored in the breast region, rather than actual breast tissue. Luckily, since it's just fat it can be treated quickly with a liposuction procedure. See the male chest section for more information.

Can I claim my liposuction through Medicare?

The only liposuction which presently has a Medicare rebate is female breast reduction. However in some circumstances when the government department has approved the case, a small rebate may be possible for male chest liposuction.

Do I have to wear a compression garment?

All patients who have a liposuction are required to wear a compression garment as this helps the skin to re-adhere in the correct position and helps with skin retraction.

How painful is liposuction?

Any discomfort is usually reflective of the area(s) treated. A chin liposuction is not as uncomfortable as a chest liposuction. It is normal for bruising and swelling for one to two weeks and most patients explain the discomfort as being like a hard work out at the gym or being punched a few times.
